"The Crusade for Freedom" was launched by Gen. Dwight "Ike" Eisenhower in September 1950.

The Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe, he became the first head of NATO. As a US President (1953-1961) Eisenhower maintained pressure on the Soviet Union, made nuclear weapons a higher defense priority, launched the Space Race.
