In 1997 Bulgaria was at breaking point, facing an overall crisis. Tens of thousands of people were protesting daily against the former Communist government. On 10 January the country's parliament in Sofia came under siege.

A newsreel about the building of the town of Dimitrovgrad and the visit there of the newly-appointed Bulgarian PM, Valko Chervenkov.

Dimitrovgrad was built on the banks of the river Maritza between 1947-1949 through wide use of forced labour and after merging several villages from the area. It was to be a model of Communist town planning with the purpose of creating a modern industrial centre.
