In 1997 Bulgaria was at breaking point, facing an overall crisis. Tens of thousands of people were protesting daily against the former Communist government. On 10 January the country's parliament in Sofia came under siege.

Bulgaria’s ex-Communist ruler of more than 30 years Todor Zhivkov flanked by the present Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov. Early 1990s.
A martial arts master, after a career in private security, Borisov moved to politics and served as a mayor of the capital Sofia. A party he founded won a landslide parliamentary victory in July 2009.

Fast forward a decade: same job, new boss. Borissov providing security for the last King of Bulgaria, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Spring 2001, Plovdiv.
Simeon II returned to power as PM after the party he founded won a landslide victory only a few weeks later.
